SNC4M is the Grade 12 University/College science course exploring science in health-related fields: medical technologies, pathogens and disease, nutritional science, public health, and biotechnology. It’s designed for students who want a senior science credit — including those headed to programs outside the sciences.
The prerequisite for SNC4M is Grade 10 Academic Science (SNC2D) or any Grade 11 university, university/college, or college preparation science course. That unusually flexible prerequisite makes SNC4M the most accessible Grade 12 science.
Generally yes. SNC4M focuses on health and society topics at a conceptual level rather than the heavy biochemistry of SBI4U or the calculation load of SCH4U. It’s a strong choice for a senior science credit when your programs don’t specifically require biology or chemistry.
SNC4M is an M-level credit that counts toward your top six for university admission. However, programs that specifically require SBI4U or SCH4U (most health-science and engineering programs) won’t substitute SNC4M — it works best as a top-six booster or for programs without specific science requirements.
SNC4M covers medical technologies (imaging, diagnostics), pathogens and disease (immunity, epidemiology), nutritional science, public health issues, and biotechnology — science with direct relevance to health careers and informed citizenship.
SNC4M suits students who want a senior science for their top six without the intensity of SBI4U/SCH4U, students heading to college health programs, and anyone interested in health and medicine. Students needing specific sciences for their program should take those required courses instead.
Yes. Many students take SNC4M at OES to raise a mark for university or college applications — Ontario uses your highest grade for the course. The course is self-paced and open year-round, so you can retake it alongside your day-school timetable and finish in as little as 4 weeks.
Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and SNC4M at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.
SNC4M meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.
Yes — science is one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups (business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education), from which students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit. For math and science, the credit counts when earned in addition to your compulsory math and science credits, so SNC4M can double as your STEM-group credit.
Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, SNC4M is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 25% for Grades 11–12, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.

I had a great experience using OES for a prerequisite course I needed to attend nursing school. I found it super easy to learn and use the LMS. I highly recommend and if I need U level courses in the future I will definitely get them through OES.
I can pick and choose when I want to work.

Great course, I’ve learned lots and got my necessary credits for college now. I love how I can pick and choose when I want to work and decide when my deadlines are since that’s the most stressful part of traditional schooling for me.
