Course registration open year-round

💻 Fulfills OSSD Online Graduation Requirement

MBF3C course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematics as a problem solving tool in the real world. Students in MBF3C will extend their understanding of quadratic relations; investigate situations involving exponential growth; solve problems involving compound interest; solve financial problems connected with vehicle ownership; develop their ability to reason by collecting, analysing, and evaluating data involving one variable; connect probability and statistics; and solve problems in geometry and trigonometry. Students in MBF3C will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking.

Supported by Ontario Certified Teachers

MBF3C is the Grade 11 College-preparation math course focused on practical mathematics for college programs and everyday life: quadratic relations, exponential relations, data and probability, and personal finance topics like budgeting, interest, and credit. It leads to MAP4C in Grade 12.

The prerequisite for MBF3C is Grade 10 Applied math (MFM2P) or the Grade 9/10 pathway equivalent. Students from MPM2D can also take it if a college-focused math pathway fits their goals.

MBF3C leads directly to MAP4C (Foundations for College Mathematics, Grade 12), the math credit most Ontario college programs look for. The MBF3C → MAP4C pathway is the standard route for students heading to college programs in business, health, trades, and community services.

MBF3C meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

MBF3C covers quadratic and exponential relations at an applied level, data management and probability, and a strong personal-finance strand: earning income, budgeting, saving, borrowing, interest, and smart consumer decisions — math you’ll use in college programs and in life.

For most Ontario college programs, the MBF3C → MAP4C pathway meets the math requirement. Some technology-focused college programs prefer MCT4C (which requires MCF3M or MCR3U), so check your target program’s requirements on OCAS before finalizing your pathway.

Yes. Students use MBF3C at OES to lighten a heavy semester, recover a missed credit, or get ahead over a break or the summer. It’s self-paced and open year-round — finish in as little as 4 weeks or spread the work over up to 12 months around your other commitments.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and MBF3C at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Yes — mathematics is one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups (business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education), from which students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit. For math and science, the credit counts when earned in addition to your compulsory math and science credits, so MBF3C can double as your STEM-group credit.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, MBF3C is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 25% for Grades 11–12, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
