MPM2D – Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics Online Course (Ontario)

Prerequisite: MTH1W
Registration open year-round

💻 Fulfills OSSD Online Graduation Requirement

MPM2D enables students to broaden their understanding of relationships and extend their problem-solving and algebraic skills through investigation, the effective use of technology, and abstract reasoning. MPM2D students will explore quadratic relations and their applications; solve and apply linear systems; verify properties of geometric figures using analytic geometry; and investigate the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. MPM2D utilizes technology effectively, fostering abstract reasoning and a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Students in MPM2D will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems.

MPM2D, Principles of Mathematics, is the Grade 10 Academic math course. Students explore quadratic relations and their applications, solve linear systems, verify geometric properties using analytic geometry, and study the trigonometry of right and acute triangles. It is the standard pathway to Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) and senior university-preparation math.

MPM2D meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

The prerequisite for MPM2D is Grade 9 Mathematics (MTH1W, the de-streamed course). There is no minimum-mark cutoff — any student who has earned the MTH1W credit can enrol in MPM2D.

Yes. MPM2D is the prerequisite for MCR3U (Functions, Grade 11 University), which is in turn required for Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Calculus (MCV4U). If university programs in STEM, business, or health science are on your radar, MPM2D is the Grade 10 math course that keeps that pathway open.

MPM2D (Academic) leads to Grade 11 University math (MCR3U) and the senior math courses universities require, while MFM2P (Applied/Foundations) leads toward college-preparation math. MPM2D is more abstract and algebra-heavy; MFM2P is more applied. Choose MPM2D if you may need university-level math later — it keeps the most doors open.

MPM2D covers quadratic relations (graphing, factoring, and solving quadratic equations), linear systems and their applications, analytic geometry (midpoints, distances, and properties of shapes on the coordinate plane), and right- and acute-triangle trigonometry, including the sine and cosine laws. These are the foundations senior math courses build on directly.

Yes. Many students take one or two OES courses alongside their regular day school to free up a timetable, resolve a conflict, or work ahead. OES notifies your day school and your MPM2D mark is added to your Ontario Student Transcript. The course is self-paced with year-round registration, so it fits around your existing schedule.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and MPM2D at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Yes — mathematics is one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups (business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education), from which students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit. For math and science, the credit counts when earned in addition to your compulsory math and science credits, so MPM2D can double as your STEM-group credit.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, MPM2D is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
