BEM1O is Ontario’s Grade 9 Open-level business course that introduces entrepreneurial thinking alongside practical digital-literacy skills — word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software, and website design. Students learn to research, communicate, and solve problems with technology while exploring how an entrepreneurial mindset applies to school, work, and everyday life.
Yes. BEM1O belongs to the business studies group, one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups — business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education. Students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit from this group among their compulsory credits, and earning BEM1O at OES satisfies that graduation requirement.
In BEM1O you build digital-literacy and business-technology skills: word processing, spreadsheets, databases, desktop publishing, presentation software, and website design, plus effective electronic research and communication. The course also develops entrepreneurial problem-solving and an understanding of how information and communication technology shapes modern business.
BEM1O is a Grade 9 business studies course with a strong digital-technology focus. You build practical computer and digital-literacy skills — spreadsheets, databases, presentations, and website basics — while developing entrepreneurial thinking. That blend is why it counts within the STEM-related course group for the OSSD.
BEM1O meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.
No. BEM1O is an Open Grade 9 course with no prerequisite, so any student can enrol. It is designed as an entry point that builds foundational business, technology, and digital-literacy skills used across the rest of high school and beyond.
Yes. Many students take one or two OES courses alongside their regular day school to free up a timetable, resolve a conflict, or work ahead. OES notifies your day school and your BEM1O mark is added to your Ontario Student Transcript. The course is self-paced with year-round registration, so it fits around your existing schedule.
Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and BEM1O at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.
Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, BEM1O is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
