FAQs

Supported by Ontario Certified Teachers

FSF1O is the Open-level Grade 9 Core French course that builds listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for students with little or no previous French. It introduces everyday French communication and the cultures of French-speaking communities at an accessible pace.

FSF1O is the Open-level Core French course for students with limited prior French, while FSF1D is the Academic-level course for students continuing from Grade 8 Core French. Both earn a Grade 9 French credit; FSF1D moves faster and assumes a stronger French foundation.

Little or no prior French is needed. FSF1O is an Open course designed for beginners and students who want to rebuild their French foundation, introducing core vocabulary and communication skills step by step in a self-paced online format.

In FSF1O you build everyday French through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You learn practical vocabulary and communication for real situations, explore French-speaking cultures, and develop confidence using French step by step — all at an accessible Open level designed for beginners.

Oral French is built into FSF1O online: you complete listening activities with authentic audio and submit recorded speaking tasks, which your certified French teacher reviews with personalized feedback on pronunciation and fluency. [OES: confirm your exact oral-assessment format.] Practising by recording also lets you rehearse until you’re confident — something many beginners prefer to speaking live in class.

FSF1O meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

Yes. Students take FSF1O at OES to earn the credit alongside their day school, to get ahead, or to fit it around a busy schedule. It’s self-paced and open year-round, so you can start any day and finish in as little as 4 weeks or take up to 12 months.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and FSF1O at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, FSF1O is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
