Yes, for universities that accept the Ontario Secondary School Diploma — which includes anglophone universities in Quebec, universities across the rest of Canada, and institutions internationally. Instead of two years of CEGEP, the student completes roughly one year of Ontario Grade 12 courses and graduates with the OSSD. The exception: several French-language Quebec universities still require CEGEP, so check each admissions office first.

Three things. The Secondary V transcript and OES entrance tests are assessed and converted into Ontario credits; the student completes approximately seven university/college-preparation (U/M) courses plus the Ontario Literacy Course (OLC4O); and 40 hours of community involvement are logged. An academic advisor confirms the exact list after assessment, since it depends on prior credits and the target program’s prerequisites.

Not if they are 16 or older by the July preceding their Grade 12 start in Ontario — at that point they are outside the DEM homeschooling framework and enroll directly with OES. This is the most common situation for pre-university students, since most have already completed Secondary V.

The OSSD is used by students pursuing NCAA eligibility with US schools, and Ontario courses are recognised within the NCAA framework. Course selection matters: the NCAA Eligibility Center requires specific core courses, so schedules should be planned with an OES academic advisor and verified against the Eligibility Center’s requirements for the target division before registering.

Timeline and flexibility, mainly. CEGEP is a two-year structured program on a fixed timetable; the OSSD route is roughly one year, fully online and self-paced, with no daily schedule — and it sits outside the Bill 96 French-language course requirements that apply in CEGEP. The trade-off: CEGEP remains required for several French-language Quebec universities and certain program pathways.

Yes — that is a large part of the appeal. With no live classes, fixed timetable, or attendance schedule, the program fits around employment, elite athletic training, or performance commitments. Each course carries a 12-month window with pace set entirely by the student.

Quebec results are assessed and granted as Ontario credits, and courses taken at OES are graded as Ontario percentage grades on a standard Ontario Student Transcript. Universities then see an ordinary Ontario transcript, and the admissions average is calculated from Grade 12 U/M courses in the normal Ontario way.

Work backwards from the university’s application deadline, not from September. Most Canadian universities need final or predicted grades by late spring, so beginning the assessment the previous summer or early autumn leaves comfortable margin. Because registration is open every day of the year, later starts remain possible — Fast Track grading exists for exactly this pressure.
