MTH1W online course enables students to consolidate, and continue to develop, an understanding of mathematical concepts related to number sense and operations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data, probability, and financial literacy. Students in MTH1W will use mathematical processes, mathematical modelling, and coding to make sense of the mathematics they are learning and to apply their understanding to culturally responsive and relevant real-world situations. Additionally, MTH1W students will continue to enhance their mathematical reasoning skills, including proportional reasoning, spatial reasoning, and algebraic reasoning, as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. Throughout MTH1W, students will solve problems, communicate their thinking, and become a more confident math user.

FAQs
Supported by Ontario Certified Teachers
MTH1W is the compulsory Grade 9 de-streamed mathematics course in Ontario, covering number sense, algebra, linear relations, data, geometry and measurement, financial literacy, and coding. It replaced the old academic (MPM1D) and applied (MFM1P) courses, so every Grade 9 student now takes the same math course and keeps all Grade 10 options open.
MTH1W is manageable for most students, but it moves quickly through algebra, linear relations, and problem-solving, so falling behind makes it feel harder. Students who keep a steady pace and ask for help do well. At OES, free 24/7 tutoring and on-demand support from certified math teachers are included to help when a concept doesn’t click.
De-streaming didn’t make the math harder — it replaced the separate academic and applied courses with one common course (MTH1W) so all Grade 9 students learn the same curriculum. The goal is to keep every Grade 10 pathway open. Self-paced online learning with built-in tutoring lets each student work at a comfortable level.
Both Grade 10 math courses require only MTH1W, with no minimum-mark cutoff. Choose MPM2D (Academic) if you’re heading toward university-preparation math and senior STEM courses, or MFM2P (Foundations/Applied) for a college-focused pathway. Your MTH1W experience and goals guide the choice — a guidance counsellor can help you decide.
MTH1W covers number sense and operations, algebra and equations, linear relations, data and probability, geometry and measurement, and financial literacy, plus an introduction to coding and mathematical modelling. Students apply these skills to real-world problems and build the algebra and reasoning foundation needed for every Grade 10 math course.
OES includes free 24/7 online tutoring and on-demand access to certified math teachers and subject-matter experts, so help is available whenever a concept is unclear. Lessons are self-paced, so you can re-read and re-attempt material as often as you need. Many students find this support makes MTH1W more manageable than a fixed classroom pace.
Yes. Students take MTH1W at OES to get ahead before Grade 10, to fit it around a busy timetable, or to retake it and raise a mark — Ontario counts your highest grade. The course is self-paced and open year-round, so you can start any day and finish in as little as 4 weeks.
Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and MTH1W at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.
MTH1W meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.
Yes — mathematics is one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups (business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education), from which students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit. For math and science, the credit counts when earned in addition to your compulsory math and science credits, so MTH1W can double as your STEM-group credit.
Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, MTH1W is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings. [OES: confirm whether the EQAO Grade 9 math assessment — weighted 20% of the final mark from 2026–27 — applies to your MTH1W students, and add a sentence if so.]

The prerequisite course I needed for nursing school was super easy to learn.
Brianna Logan
I had a great experience using OES for a prerequisite course I needed to attend nursing school. I found it super easy to learn and use the LMS. I highly recommend and if I need U level courses in the future I will definitely get them through OES.
I can pick and choose when I want to work.
Hakan Leonard
Great course, I’ve learned lots and got my necessary credits for college now. I love how I can pick and choose when I want to work and decide when my deadlines are since that’s the most stressful part of traditional schooling for me.
