CHV2O, Civics and Citizenship (0.5 credit), Grade 10, Open – online course

CHV2O is Ontario’s compulsory Grade 10 civics course. Students explore the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society, how political processes work at local, national, and global levels, and issues of civic importance like community planning, environmental responsibility, and the influence of social media.

Yes on both counts. CHV2O is a 0.5-credit, 55-hour course, and it is compulsory for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Every Ontario student must complete it. It is usually paired with Career Studies (GLC2O), the other required half credit, to make one full credit.

CHV2O is a 55-hour half-credit course — half the length of a full course — so motivated students can complete it in as little as 2 to 4 weeks at OES. It’s self-paced with year-round registration, making it a popular course to knock out quickly over a break or alongside a busy timetable.

CHV2O meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

Many students do. CHV2O (Civics) and GLC2O (Career Studies) are both compulsory 55-hour half credits, and completing them together online adds up to one full credit while clearing two graduation requirements at once. Taking both at OES also triggers the multi-course discount.

Yes. Students use CHV2O at OES to lighten a heavy semester, recover a missed credit, or get ahead over a break or the summer. It’s self-paced and open year-round — finish in as little as 4 weeks or spread the work over up to 12 months around your other commitments.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and CHV2O at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, CHV2O is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
