CLN4U is the Grade 12 University-preparation law course. Students explore legal philosophy and the foundations of law, rights and freedoms, criminal and civil law in depth, and international law — developing the legal analysis and argumentation skills that pre-law university pathways reward.
CLN4U’s standard prerequisite is any university or university/college preparation course in Canadian and world studies, English, or social sciences and humanities. CLU3M (Grade 11 Law) is the natural lead-in but isn’t strictly required. [OES: confirm your published prerequisite.]
Yes, as strong early groundwork. Law school follows an undergraduate degree, but CLN4U builds case analysis, legal reasoning, and structured argumentation — the exact skills that political science, criminology, and justice-studies programs (common pre-law routes) develop further.
CLN4U meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.
CLN4U covers legal foundations and philosophy (what law is and why it evolves), rights and freedoms (Charter litigation, human rights), criminal law and procedure in depth, civil law, and international law — treaties, courts, and global human-rights frameworks.
Yes. CLN4U is a U-level course counting toward the top six for university admission — popular with students applying to political science, criminology, legal studies, and social-science programs.
Yes. Many students take one or two OES courses alongside their regular day school to free up a timetable, resolve a conflict, or work ahead. OES notifies your day school and your CLN4U mark is added to your Ontario Student Transcript. The course is self-paced with year-round registration, so it fits around your existing schedule.
Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and CLN4U at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.
Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, CLN4U is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 25% for Grades 11–12, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.

I had a great experience using OES for a prerequisite course I needed to attend nursing school. I found it super easy to learn and use the LMS. I highly recommend and if I need U level courses in the future I will definitely get them through OES.
I can pick and choose when I want to work.
Hakan Leonard
Great course, I’ve learned lots and got my necessary credits for college now. I love how I can pick and choose when I want to work and decide when my deadlines are since that’s the most stressful part of traditional schooling for me.
