SBI3U furthers students’ understanding of the processes that occur in biological systems. Students in SBI3U will study theory and conduct investigations in the areas of biodiversity; evolution; genetic processes; the structure and function of animals; and the anatomy, growth, and function of plants. The SBI3U online course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study, and helps students refine skills related to scientific investigation. Through SBI3U, students will learn to design and conduct investigations, refining your abilities as a scientific thinker.
Course curriculum
Inside %course-code%: the living world in five units
The step before SBI4U
SBI3U is the prerequisite for Grade 12 Biology, which life-science, health-science, kinesiology and nursing programs ask for. The genetics, evolution and physiology here are the ground Grade 12 builds on.
Genetics you can work out
Meiosis, monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, and karyotyping — plus the social and ethical side of genetic research, explored through a report on a genetic disorder you choose.
Evolution and biodiversity
Look at the evidence for evolution, model natural selection and genetic drift, build your own dichotomous key, and consider how human activity affects the diversity of living things.
From body systems to plants
The respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems and their disorders, then the structures, transport systems and sustainable use of plants in Canadian society.
Virtual labs — run the experiment
Interactive labs in every unit: diffusion, mouse genetics, human karyotyping, natural selection, the lytic cycle, dichotomous keys and pollination. Follow the procedure, gather observations, and draw your own conclusions.

SBI3U Course outline
Full unit-by-unit breakdown.
Investigate, through lab inquiry or simulation, how the respiratory and circulatory systems respond and how they relate to digestion. Understand animal anatomy and physiology, describe disorders of each system, and see how societal needs and technology have changed our understanding of human internal systems.
