ENG2D, English, Grade 10, Academic – online course

ENG2D is the Grade 10 Academic English course that extends the reading, writing, and oral and media communication skills built in Grade 9. Students analyze literary and informational texts with growing independence and write in a range of forms. ENG2D is the standard pathway toward Grade 11 University English (ENG3U) and Grade 12 ENG4U.

ENG2D meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

The prerequisite for ENG2D is Grade 9 English (ENL1W, the de-streamed course, or the former ENG1D/ENG1P). Because Grade 9 is now de-streamed, every student who completed ENL1W is eligible to take ENG2D.

Yes. ENG2D is the prerequisite for Grade 11 University English (ENG3U), which in turn is the prerequisite for ENG4U — the Grade 12 English credit required by virtually every Ontario university program. If university is a possibility, ENG2D is the English course to take in Grade 10.

Yes. Most Ontario students write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) in Grade 10, and the reading-comprehension and clear-writing skills ENG2D develops are exactly what the test assesses. Completing ENG2D coursework is strong, direct preparation for the OSSLT graduation requirement.

In ENG2D you study novels, short stories, poetry, drama, and informational and media texts, and you write analytical essays, narratives, reports, and opinion pieces. You also build oral communication and media-literacy skills. The focus is on analyzing texts with more depth and writing with more structure than in Grade 9.

Yes. Many students take ENG2D at OES to raise a mark for university or college applications — Ontario uses your highest grade for the course. The course is self-paced and open year-round, so you can retake it alongside your day-school timetable and finish in as little as 4 weeks.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and ENG2D at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, ENG2D is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
