FSF1D is the Academic-level Grade 9 Core French course that develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French for students continuing from Grade 8 Core French. Students deepen their communication skills and explore the cultures of French-speaking communities in Canada and worldwide.
FSF1D is the Academic Core French course for students continuing from Grade 8 French, while FSF1O is the Open course for students with little prior French. Both earn a Grade 9 French credit; FSF1D assumes a stronger foundation and is the usual path for future French study.
FSF1D is designed for students continuing from Grade 8 Core French (roughly 600 hours of French instruction). If your French background is more limited, the Open course FSF1O may be a better fit — both earn a Grade 9 French credit toward the OSSD.
In FSF1D you develop stronger listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in French, building on your Grade 8 Core French. You work with more complex texts and communication tasks, explore French-speaking cultures, and prepare for senior French study at an academic level.
FSF1D is the recommended Academic path for students who plan to continue with French in Grade 10 and beyond. It builds the stronger foundation expected in senior Core French courses and supports pathways toward French-language study and bilingual opportunities.
FSF1D meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.
Yes. Many students take one or two OES courses alongside their regular day school to free up a timetable, resolve a conflict, or work ahead. OES notifies your day school and your FSF1D mark is added to your Ontario Student Transcript. The course is self-paced with year-round registration, so it fits around your existing schedule.
Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and FSF1D at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.
Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, FSF1D is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.

I had a great experience using OES for a prerequisite course I needed to attend nursing school. I found it super easy to learn and use the LMS. I highly recommend and if I need U level courses in the future I will definitely get them through OES.
I can pick and choose when I want to work.
Hakan Leonard
Great course, I’ve learned lots and got my necessary credits for college now. I love how I can pick and choose when I want to work and decide when my deadlines are since that’s the most stressful part of traditional schooling for me.
