CHC2D – Grade 10 Canadian History since World War I Online Course (Ontario)

CHC2D, Canadian History since World War I, is the Grade 10 Academic history course. Students explore the people, events, and forces that have shaped Canada from 1914 to the present — the World Wars, the Depression, immigration, Indigenous experiences, and Canada’s changing global role — while building historical-thinking and inquiry skills.

Yes. Every Ontario student needs one Grade 10 Canadian history credit to graduate, and CHC2D satisfies that compulsory requirement. Taking it online at OES lets you complete this required credit on your own schedule, any time of year.

CHC2D meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

CHC2D (Academic) explores Canadian history in greater depth with more analysis and writing, while CHC2P (Applied) covers similar themes with a more practical, skills-based approach. Both satisfy the compulsory history credit. CHC2D is the usual choice for students planning university-preparation courses; either meets the graduation requirement.

Yes. CHC2D (or CHC2P) is the prerequisite for Grade 11 Canadian Law (CLU3M) and Grade 11 World History (CHW3M). If law, history, or social science interests you for senior years, completing your Grade 10 history credit opens those doors.

CHC2D covers Canada from 1914 to the present: the First and Second World Wars, the interwar years and Great Depression, post-war prosperity and social change, Quebec and constitutional debates, Indigenous histories and reconciliation, immigration, and Canada’s evolving international role. You’ll practise historical inquiry using primary sources throughout.

Yes. Many students take CHC2D at OES to raise a mark for university or college applications — Ontario uses your highest grade for the course. The course is self-paced and open year-round, so you can retake it alongside your day-school timetable and finish in as little as 4 weeks.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and CHC2D at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, CHC2D is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
