MDM4U – Grade 12 Mathematics of Data Management Online Course (Ontario)

MDM4U is Ontario’s Grade 12 university-preparation math course for students headed into business, the social sciences and the humanities, where programs use statistics rather than calculus. It covers probability, probability distributions, data collection and sampling, and one- and two-variable statistical analysis, ending in a culminating investigation. Ontario eSecondary School (OES) offers MDM4U fully online and self-paced, with marking and support from Ontario Certified Teachers.

Credit: 1.0
Prerequisite: MCR3U or MCF3M
110 course hours
Registration open year-round

💻 Fulfills OSSD Online Graduation Requirement

The MDM4U online course is designed to expand students’ mathematical knowledge with a focus on data analysis and real-world application. Students learn to organize and interpret large datasets, solve problems using probability and statistics, and complete a culminating investigation that integrates key concepts. This course strengthens essential math skills for senior-level success while preparing students for university programs in business, social sciences, and humanities, bridging the gap between theory and practical application.

MDM4U is the Grade 12 University-preparation math course in statistics and probability. Students study counting techniques, probability distributions, organization and analysis of data, and statistical literacy, culminating in an independent data-investigation project. It’s a U-level math accepted by many university programs.

MDM4U is generally considered the most approachable of the three U-level maths because it’s grounded in data and probability rather than abstract functions or calculus. It still requires steady work — counting problems and distributions have real depth — but most students find it lighter than MHF4U or MCV4U.

The prerequisite for MDM4U is MCR3U (Functions, Grade 11 University) or MCF3M (Functions and Applications, Grade 11 University/College). Accepting MCF3M makes MDM4U the most accessible U-level Grade 12 math.

Many programs in social science, humanities, health science, and some business programs accept MDM4U as their required or optional U-level math. However, most competitive business programs and all STEM programs require MHF4U (and often MCV4U) instead. Always verify each program’s math requirement on OUAC before relying on MDM4U.

MDM4U covers permutations and combinations (counting), probability and probability distributions (including binomial and normal), one- and two-variable statistics, data collection and analysis, and statistical literacy — finishing with a culminating investigation where you gather and analyze real data on a question you choose.

Yes. MDM4U pairs well with MHF4U for business, economics, and data-oriented programs: it adds a strong U-level mark to your top six and builds the statistics foundation that first-year business, psychology, and social-science stats courses assume. Taking both at OES also triggers the multi-course discount.

Yes. OES offers a dedicated Upgrade: MDM4U course built specifically for retaking MDM4U to raise your mark — Ontario universities and colleges use your highest grade. It’s self-paced and open year-round, so you can upgrade alongside your day school, a job, or a gap year and finish in as little as 4 weeks. See the Upgrade: MDM4U page for details.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and MDM4U at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

MDM4U meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

Yes — mathematics is one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups (business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education), from which students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit. For math and science, the credit counts when earned in addition to your compulsory math and science credits, so MDM4U can double as your STEM-group credit.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, MDM4U is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 25% for Grades 11–12, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
