Ontario university admission averages are calculated from six Grade 12 U or M courses, always including ENG4U, plus the specific prerequisites the program requires — commonly MCV4U and SCH4U for engineering, SBI4U and SCH4U for life sciences, MHF4U or MDM4U for business. Requirements differ meaningfully between universities, so check each program on OUAC before finalising course selection.

More than in any other year. From 2026–27, Grade 12 English, math and science marks carry a mandatory written final exam worth 25%, with 65% coursework and 10% attendance and participation — and these are the exact courses (ENG4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, SCH4U, SBI4U) that build the top-six admission average. One exam now moves an admission average in a way it didn’t under the old model. OES courses have always ended in a proctored final, and Fast Track grading exists for students whose results need to land before a deadline.

Yes. A course completed within the past 12 months with at least 50% can be retaken as a repeat: one credit is earned, both attempts show on the Ontario Student Transcript with an “R” beside the lower mark, and Ontario universities generally calculate with the higher grade. Timing is the strategic part — work backwards from the application cycle so the upgraded mark exists when offers are decided. A small number of competitive programs publish their own repeat policies, so check the target program first.

With no fixed end date, a motivated student can complete a course in roughly four weeks, and Fast Track brings summative grading to 1–2 business days with 24-hour teacher responses. Students regularly use this to clear a conditional offer or add a mark before OUAC deadlines. Talk to admissions about the specific date before enrolling so the timeline is realistic from day one.

Three checks: 40 hours of community involvement, the literacy requirement (OSSLT, or the OLC4O course if the test wasn’t passed or sat), and at least two online learning credits for students who started Grade 9 in 2020–21 or later. Grade 12 is the year to close any of these still open — none can be finished after the last course if the diploma is needed for a fall admission.

Conditional offers are typically made on Grade 11 finals and Grade 12 midterm marks, then confirmed against final marks. OES sends an official midterm report card at the halfway point of every course and a final report card at completion, to the student and the home school — so a course taken here feeds the application cycle the same way a day-school course does. Sequence courses so midterms exist when universities are reading files.

Yes — taking an additional Grade 12 U or M course is the standard way to displace a weak mark from the top six, and it avoids any repeat-course considerations entirely because it’s a brand-new credit. Students often add MDM4U, a social science, or a business course alongside their day-school load. Each OES course runs on its own 12-month clock, so it layers onto a full timetable without conflict.
