MCR3U is Ontario’s Grade 11 university-preparation math course and the prerequisite for Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Data Management (MDM4U). MCR3U is the Grade 11 University-preparation math course that introduces the concept of a function. Students study quadratic, exponential, and trigonometric functions, transformations, discrete functions (sequences and series), and financial applications. MCR3U is the essential gateway to Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U) and Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U). This course has been developed based on the following Ministry of Ontario Curriculum for Grade 11 Mathematics.

MCR3U has a reputation as one of the toughest jumps in high school math because it shifts from computation to abstract thinking about functions, and trigonometry gets significantly deeper. It’s very doable with steady practice. At OES, self-pacing plus free 24/7 math tutoring lets you slow down exactly where you need to — a real advantage in this course.

The prerequisite for MCR3U is Grade 10 Academic math (MPM2D). Students coming from MFM2P typically take MCF3M instead, or complete a bridging route. A comfortable grasp of quadratics and algebra from MPM2D matters more in MCR3U than in any earlier math course.

Yes. MCR3U is the direct prerequisite for MHF4U (Advanced Functions), and MHF4U in turn is required for MCV4U (Calculus and Vectors). Since most university STEM, business, and many health-science programs require MHF4U — and engineering requires MCV4U — MCR3U is the course that keeps those pathways open.

MCR3U (University) is more abstract and is the prerequisite for MHF4U, the math most university programs require. MCF3M covers similar function topics with more applications and leads to MDM4U or MCT4C. If you might need MHF4U or MCV4U, take MCR3U; MCF3M suits college-bound or mixed pathways.

Universities look at your Grade 12 marks, so MCR3U doesn’t appear in admission averages — but it predicts them. Students who finish MCR3U at 70%+ are far better positioned for MHF4U, where competitive programs often want mid-70s to high-80s. Building strong function skills in MCR3U pays off directly in Grade 12.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and MCR3U at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

MCR3U meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

Yes — mathematics is one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups (business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education), from which students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit. For math and science, the credit counts when earned in addition to your compulsory math and science credits, so MCR3U can double as your STEM-group credit.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, MCR3U is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 25% for Grades 11–12, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
