If your course has a prerequisite, we also need a copy of your official transcript showing you’ve completed the equivalent. If your transcript isn’t in English, send the original along with an English translation. A clear scan or smartphone photo of each document is fine.
All OES courses are delivered in English, so every student completes the OES English proficiency assessment as part of admission. It confirms you can read, write, and understand English well enough to succeed in your courses.
IELTS or TOEFL is not required for admission — though if you’ve completed either, send us your results as supporting documentation. Worth knowing: some Canadian colleges and universities waive their IELTS/TOEFL requirement for applicants who hold an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
Before enrollment, every international student completes an Equivalency/PLAR assessment. The fee is $250 CAD and includes creation of your Ontario Education Number (OEN) and Ontario Student Record (OSR), your equivalency assessment results, grading of the OES English proficiency assessment, and guidance toward completing the OSSD.
Through PLAR, you may transfer up to 75% of the credits you’ve already earned at your home school toward the Ontario diploma — meaning most students only complete the remaining 25% of courses with OES.
Tuition for international students is $895 CAD per course, for any subject from Grade 9 through 12.
That single fee covers everything: all course materials, tests, final examinations, communication with your Ontario Certified Teacher, and unlimited 24/7 online tutoring through Paper Tutoring. There are no textbooks to buy — e-copies are provided wherever materials are required.
If you’re studying online from your home country, you do not need a Canadian study permit — you’re not physically studying in Canada.
If you plan to enter Canada to study in person, you may require a visa or permit. OES does not provide immigration services; please contact Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for details.

No. A study permit is not required to take Ontario eSecondary School courses online from outside Canada, because the student is not physically studying in Canada. Anyone who later plans to enter Canada to study in person may need a visa or permit — OES does not provide immigration services, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is the correct authority to consult. The OSSD itself is unaffected either way.

Because the OSSD is issued under Ontario Ministry of Education authority, it carries the same standing as a diploma earned in person in Ontario. None — the program is fully asynchronous. There are no live classes and no fixed login times; students work whenever suits their day and communicate with their Ontario Certified Teacher by email. The only scheduled element is a proctored test or exam, which is booked in advance around the student’s availability.
