Supported by Ontario Certified Teachers

BAF3M is the Grade 11 University/College accounting course. Students learn the fundamentals of financial accounting: the accounting cycle, journals and ledgers, financial statements (income statement and balance sheet), and how accounting information supports business decisions. It’s the prerequisite for Grade 12 Accounting (BAT4M).

No. BAF3M has no prerequisite — any Grade 11 student can enrol. It’s a common first business credit and a strong foundation for students considering commerce, business administration, or accounting after high school.

BAF3M meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

Yes. BAF3M (and BAT4M after it) gives students a real head start in university commerce and college business programs, where introductory accounting is a required first-year course. It also signals genuine business interest on applications and helps you test-drive the field before committing.

In BAF3M you learn the full accounting cycle: recording transactions in journals, posting to ledgers, preparing trial balances, adjusting entries, and producing an income statement and balance sheet. You’ll also explore ethics in accounting and how technology is used in modern bookkeeping.

Yes. BAF3M is the prerequisite for BAT4M (Financial Accounting Principles, Grade 12), which deepens the work into corporations, partnerships, and financial analysis. The BAF3M → BAT4M sequence is the standard accounting pathway at OES for business-bound students.

Yes. Many students take one or two OES courses alongside their regular day school to free up a timetable, resolve a conflict, or work ahead. OES notifies your day school and your BAF3M mark is added to your Ontario Student Transcript. The course is self-paced with year-round registration, so it fits around your existing schedule.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and BAF3M at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Yes. BAF3M belongs to the business studies group, one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups — business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education. Students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit from this group among their compulsory credits, and earning BAF3M at OES satisfies that graduation requirement.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, BAF3M is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 25% for Grades 11–12, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
