Supported by Ontario Certified Teachers

BAT4M is the Grade 12 University/College accounting course. Students deepen financial-accounting skills: accounting for assets, partnerships and corporations, financial-statement analysis, and how accounting information supports decision-making — preparing directly for post-secondary accounting.

The prerequisite for BAT4M is BAF3M (Financial Accounting Fundamentals, Grade 11). Students without BAF3M should take it first; OES offers both, and the sequence qualifies for the multi-course discount.

Very. Introductory financial accounting is a required first-year course in every commerce and business program, and BAT4M covers much of that ground early — students who’ve taken it consistently report first-year accounting feels like review. It’s also a clear signal of direction toward CPA-track pathways.

BAT4M meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

In BAT4M you learn accounting for current and capital assets (including amortization), partnership and corporate accounting (shares, dividends, retained earnings), financial-statement analysis (ratios, interpretation), and the role of accounting standards and ethics in reporting.

Yes. BAT4M is an M-level course that counts toward the top six Grade 12 U/M marks for university admission — a practical choice for business-bound students who want their average built from relevant credits.

Yes. Students use BAT4M at OES to lighten a heavy semester, recover a missed credit, or get ahead over a break or the summer. It’s self-paced and open year-round — finish in as little as 4 weeks or spread the work over up to 12 months around your other commitments.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and BAT4M at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Yes. BAT4M belongs to the business studies group, one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups — business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education. Students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit from this group among their compulsory credits, and earning BAT4M at OES satisfies that graduation requirement.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, BAT4M is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 25% for Grades 11–12, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
