SNC2D – Grade 10 Science Online Course (Ontario)

Prerequisite: SNC1W
Registration open year-round

💻 Fulfills OSSD Online Graduation Requirement

SNC2D enables students to enhance their understanding of concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics, and of the interrelationships between science, technology, society, and the environment. Students in SNC2D are also given opportunities to further develop their scientific investigation skills. Additionally, SNC2D will help students plan and conduct investigations and develop their understanding of scientific theories related to the connections between cells and systems in animals and plants; chemical reactions, with a particular focus on acid/base reactions; forces that affect climate and climate change; and the interaction of light and matter.

Supported by Ontario Certified Teachers

SNC2D is the Grade 10 Academic science course covering biology (cells and body systems), chemistry (chemical reactions, with a focus on acids and bases), physics (light and optics), and Earth science (climate). Students strengthen scientific investigation skills and explore how science, technology, society, and the environment connect.

SNC2D meets the Ministry of Education’s attendance and participation expectations through activities blended directly into the course. OES requires students to log in at least once per week for attendance, and participation activities appear throughout the course and are reflected in the grade book — preserving self-paced flexibility while satisfying the requirements for online courses.

The prerequisite for SNC2D is Grade 9 Science (SNC1W, the de-streamed course, or the former SNC1D/SNC1P). Every student who has earned the Grade 9 science credit is eligible to enrol.

Yes. SNC2D is the prerequisite for all three Grade 11 University science courses — Biology (SBI3U), Chemistry (SCH3U), and Physics (SPH3U) — which lead to the Grade 12 sciences that university programs in health science, life science, and engineering require. SNC2D is the single most important gateway science credit.

SNC2D covers four strands: biology (cells, tissues, and human body systems), chemistry (chemical reactions and acid-base chemistry), physics (light, geometric optics, lenses, and mirrors), and Earth and space science (climate change and Earth’s dynamic climate). Scientific investigation and lab skills run through every strand.

SNC2D investigations are completed through virtual labs, online simulations, and simple at-home activities using everyday materials — no school lab is needed. These interactive tools let you run experiments, manipulate variables, and record observations while meeting the same Ontario curriculum expectations as an in-class course. [OES: confirm your exact lab/simulation toolset.]

Yes. Students use SNC2D at OES to lighten a heavy semester, recover a missed credit, or get ahead over a break or the summer. It’s self-paced and open year-round — finish in as little as 4 weeks or spread the work over up to 12 months around your other commitments.

Yes. Ontario students who started Grade 9 in the 2020–21 school year or later must earn at least two online learning credits to graduate, and SNC2D at OES — a Ministry-inspected online school (BSID #667186) — counts toward that requirement. An opt-out process exists through school boards, and specific provisions apply to students affected by the 2021 school closures.

Yes — science is one of Ontario’s STEM-related course groups (business studies, computer studies, cooperative education, mathematics, science, and technological education), from which students entering Grade 9 in 2024 or later must complete one credit. For math and science, the credit counts when earned in addition to your compulsory math and science credits, so SNC2D can double as your STEM-group credit.

Ontario’s Growing Success policy pre-determines the evaluation structure for every credit. Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, SNC2D is graded on classroom work completed throughout the course (65%) plus a Ministry-mandated final evaluation worth 20% for Grades 9–10, with attendance and participation also reflected in the final grade. A credit is granted at 50% or higher — and as an inspected private school, OES may administer final evaluations online, while school-board online courses generally require in-person exam sittings.
