Online High School Courses: Common Questions
How to choose the right Ontario courses for your diploma, university or college plans.
Most Ontario universities require six Grade 12 U or M courses, including ENG4U. Programs add their own prerequisites, for example MHF4U and MCV4U for engineering, or SCH4U and SBI4U for health sciences. These are the most-taken Grade 12 courses at OES: more than 1,500 students have taken MHF4U online with OES, and more than 1,000 each have taken ENG4U, MCV4U, SCH4U and SBI4U. Check the exact requirements for your program on the university’s admissions page.
Yes. OES offers Grade 9, 10 and 11 courses online for students who want to get ahead, free up their timetable, or take a course their school doesn’t offer. Grade 9 courses include MTH1W, ENL1W and SNC1W. Grade 10 courses include MPM2D, ENG2D and CHC2D. The most popular Grade 11 courses at OES are SBI3U, SBI3C, SCH3U, SPH3U and MCR3U, which more than 500 students have taken with OES. Every course earns an Ontario credit toward the OSSD.
Most Grade 12 university courses require the matching Grade 11 course. MHF4U requires MCR3U. MCV4U requires MHF4U, which can be taken before or at the same time. ENG4U requires ENG3U, SCH4U requires SCH3U, and SBI4U requires SBI3U. If you’re missing a prerequisite, you can take the Grade 11 course at OES first, or ask about a prerequisite waiver if you have equivalent learning.
The last letter of an Ontario course code shows its destination. U courses prepare you for university, M for university or college, C for college, and O courses are open to all students. The number shows the grade, from 1 for Grade 9 to 4 for Grade 12. At OES, MHF4U is a U course, AVI4M is an M course, ENG4C is a C course, and OLC4O is an open course. You can filter the course list above by Academic Pathway.
Start before your Grade 12 midterm marks are sent. Ontario universities make most early offers from the midterm and final Grade 12 marks they receive through OUAC, so a course that finishes too late may not count toward your offer. OES uploads your marks directly to OUAC for university applications and to OCAS for college applications. If you need a mark by a specific date, book a free 15-minute guidance call with OES before you enroll so we can confirm the timing.
