SUMMER SCHOOL — Online with OES!
With the world changed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the way we interact with other people is changing dramatically and not just how we buy groceries or visit with friends and family, but how we work and how we learn. Schools in Ontario will not be opening again this year, and it’s still unknown what they will look like at the start of the new school year in September, but credits still need to be earned and content still needs to be learned.
Major summer schools are likely to be closed this summer or offer only very sparse pilot programs. For many school boards including those in the GTA where TDSB summer school will possibly not be running and likely not in-person, it poses a challenge in earning much-needed credits for students in different areas of Ontario, Canada, or even the world.
Looking to get ahead or catch up this summer? Need to earn an Ontario high school credit? Summer school through Ontario eSecondary School has never been easier! Ontario eSecondary School is here to help you reach your academic and personal goals. Many students enrol with us to upgrade their marks, meet university or college admission requirements, retake failed courses, or work ahead for the following school year.
Summer is usually a busy time, that’s why you can register for OES courses anytime while studying anywhere and learn at your own pace.
Opportunity for Learning Consolidation and Upgrading — Summer 2020 Only!
New Upgrading Courses – For summer 2020, schools will be able to offer students in Grades 9 to 12 the opportunity to review and strengthen key learning in a course they passed during the school closure period in the 2019-20 school year. Upgrading courses can be offered in a 55-hour learning format and may include remote teacher-led learning while emergency measures continue, or online courses (including correspondence/self-study).
This opportunity will allow students to improve their marks and consolidate their learning. The summer school teacher will review key concepts and overall expectations in a flexible, accelerated manner that allows students to demonstrate knowledge and skills. If a student upgrades a course, both marks will be entered on the student’s OST. The ministry is working with the postsecondary sector to encourage fair consideration of students retaking or upgrading a course as a result of school closures.
Why take a summer school course?
Keep Up With Needed Credits
With the Covid-19 pandemic leading to closed schools, many students were unable to thoroughly learn the content needed to progress. Although you may earn a credit through some of the revised Ministry of Education guidelines that deal with the pandemic, this challenging time without doubt has reduced the amount of content and learning you may have done. Many students register for summer school through Ontario eSecondary School to improve a mark in a course they’ve already taken. Why not take advantage of the fact that school’s out for summer early and upgrade that mark, or get credit ahead of schedule?
Upgrade Your Marks
Many summer students register with OES for summer school to improve a mark in a course they’ve already taken. These courses are purpose-built to help students achieve a higher grade, which could help you get into a specific college or university.
We offer upgrade versions for several high school courses that are intended for students who wish to improve their grades in courses that they have successfully completed and earned a credit in. These courses contain similar content to that previously studied and result in students earning the same credits they originally achieved — the higher of the two grades will appear on the student’s transcript. Upgrade courses have a condensed assessment workload with either fewer or shorter assessments, which generally allow for students to progress through the course at a faster pace.
To be eligible to register for an upgrade course, the student must have completed the same course within the past 12 months, earning a final grade of at least 50%. A student who registers for an upgrade course must send a copy of their final report card, transcript, or credit counselling summary sheet to Ontario eSecondary School as proof of their successful completion of the course in the past 12 months.
Retake a Failed Course
Some students enrol with Ontario eSecondary School to earn a high school credit course online in which they were previously unsuccessful. With our supportive Ontario Certified Teachers and 24/7 online tutoring service we will do our best to help you succeed. Our teachers will work with you to ensure you understand the content and are able to pass our courses with confidence.
Not only does taking a summer school course give you the chance to retake a failed course, but it opens up the opportunity to make that subject your primary focus. We know it’s summer, so you’re likely not taking a full course load and if you are great! But, allowing yourself to focus on one or two subjects only throughout the summer reduces the pressure of all the other courses you may have on the go. That way you can focus on the subjects you find more challenging to learn during the summer. This also allows you to reduce your course load in future semesters and lets you fast track your schooling.
Fast Track Your Schooling
Perhaps you want to get ahead of next school year? Students often take summer school courses to free up their timetable for the upcoming school year. This can help you to avoid timetable conflicts in both your school work and extracurriculars or it can allow you to take a reduced course load so you can focus on fewer subjects and potentially boost your grades.
We often hear of students who have taken a summer school credit in order to take one less course in their final semester so that they can focus on the end of year school play, or the upcoming football season.
We know that your priority may or may not be school when the weather is nice or if you have a summer job so being able to earn your ontario high school credits online and quickly is important! Not only that, but summer school courses allow you to learn and earn credits at your own pace. If you need to complete a course in a short period of time, you have that option. For example, courses offered through OES can be completed in as little as three weeks! If you need more time for your learning, that’s ok too.
Explore A New Subject Area
Taking an online summer school course opens up a world wide web of opportunities in subject matter. [Sorry for the dad joke]. You can explore subject areas you’ve never considered before.
Often, students who are focused on science may take a humanities or English course over the summer. This allows them to focus their time on completing the required readings, rather than juggling them alongside their science course work.
We have also heard that students take online learning courses because there are more options available online than in a physical school location. Some schools can only offer the standardized courses due to a number of factors such as class size allotment or teachers that can be considered subject matter efforts. Online schools have more flexibility on the instructors they can hire as they aren’t constrained to one physical city or location. Therefore, we can offer courses such as CLN4U- Grade 12 Canadian and International Law or more challenging math courses such as MCV4U – Calculus and Vectors and we can offer these courses with certified teachers from all over Ontario to ensure you’re getting taught by experts in these subjects.
Why take a summer school course with OES?
We Know the Challenges of Online Learning
Online learning is new for many people and sometimes the hardest thing to do is simply taking the leap into trying something new. eLearning is often scary for many people who have never tried it before. But, think of it this way – often in a classroom we read textbooks, watch video tutorials and use other forms of self-directed learning. These are all different mediums used in online courses.
Maybe you need to upgrade MCR3U? Perhaps you’ve had some challenges learning chemistry and need a new format of SCH4U? During the school year there is often more pressure with other courses in your physical school as well as extra-curricular activities. School can be busy! With much lower pressure than during the school year, school in summer with OES creates a great opportunity to try a course or two if you’ve never tried to learn online. With the Ontario Ministry of Education looking at mandatory online learning, and many colleges and universities throughout Canada resuming classes online in the fall due to the Covid-19 pandemic, taking school in summer creates that opportunity to learn at your own pace while you learn to learn online.
We Offer Free 24/7 Tutoring
We understand that some courses can be tough and that online learning is different for everyone. Taking a course with Ontario eSecondary School gives you access to experienced, Ontario College of Teachers certified instructors. However, if you require additional support please note we offer a 24/7 tutoring service that is unlimited and can help you as well.
With OES, we offer tutoring services that are provided by a third party known as GradeSlam. Students enrolled in an OES course have free access to tutoring via OES’ learning platform. The service is online, unlimited, on-demand, and instantly available 24/7 for most subject areas and includes features such as live essay editing and support in English and French. The tutors are proficient in all subject areas offered by Ontario eSecondary School.
We Have Flexible Schedules
Online summer school offers you options on where and when you learn. You won’t have to commute from one place to another, or follow a strict schedule. Our courses are structured to allow you to direct your own learning so you can take a course at night, in the early morning or during the day.
