Surprised that we’re saying that? After all, we’re a private online high school—don’t we want your business?!
Yes, of course we do!! But, only if it’s right for you.
Your success is what we’re all about here at Ontario eSecondary School (OES), so read on to learn more about online learning and, most importantly, to find out if it suits you and your learning goals.
Oh, the Freedom!
Think about it … all that time you spend getting ready and traveling to and from high school, never mind the schedule you have to follow once you get there. Do you get hungry at 10:30 AM, but your lunch period starts at 1:00 PM? Do you work late, and then struggle to make your 8:00 AM class?
With online learning at OES, that’s all history.
Our courses are asynchronous or time independent. That means you work on your own schedule, at your own pace. Sounds awesome, right? However, this is where you need to reflect a little because with that freedom you will need self-motivation and discipline. (That’s harder than it sounds!)
You also have to be organized and plan ahead on your assignments. If you want a good grade (and who doesn’t), you should try to submit your work over time to benefit from instructor feedback. Waiting until the last minute will not do you any favours!
If that all sounds good and that kind of freedom sounds just right, online learning may be for you. First though, just to be sure, you should also consider the following …
To Tech or Not to Tech
It may seem obvious, but don’t brush this aside: if you’re not comfortable with online technologies, then you need to work on that first.
At a minimum, you should be able to produce online presentations (audio and video), participate in live video chats, submit assignments in .DOC and/or .PDF formats, and participate in online discussion forums and blogs.
The plus side of all of it all is the experience you’ll get with the latest and greatest technology. Online literacy is an important skill, no matter what your future plans.
Is it still sounding good? Then keep reading …
We’re Only Human
Whether by email, video chat, or through online forums and messaging, you’ll get a lot of one-on-one virtual support and feedback from your teacher. There are many advantages to that, especially if you have specific learning needs.
But, note the word ‘virtual’—there’s a potential down side to consider and you need to be honest with yourself. Will it be enough for you, or will you miss having live humans around you in a physical classroom?
If, during those quieter moments, it’s enough to simply know that we’re out there and ready to help when you need us, then …
